Free Game: If You're Advertising Your Business, Tell People How to Buy

Barry Thomas

Great content gets attention. Clear access turns that attention into customers.

Here's some Free Game for business owners.

If you're advertising a product or service on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, or anywhere else online, there's one simple question you should be able to answer:

If someone wants what I'm selling right now, how do they get it?

It sounds obvious.

But scroll through social media for a few minutes and you'll find businesses promoting products and services without a website, phone number, booking link, email address, address, or even a clear call to action.

The post gets someone's attention.

The person becomes interested.

Then the business makes the potential customer figure out what to do next.

That's an unnecessary way to lose business.

Don't Make Customers Hunt for You

Imagine a landscaping company posts pictures of a beautiful backyard transformation.

The caption says:

"Another one finished! Contact us for your landscaping needs."

A homeowner sees it and thinks:

I need these people.

Perfect.

That's exactly what marketing is supposed to accomplish.

But what happens next?

There's no phone number.

There's no website.

There's no quote-request link.

Now that customer has to visit the company's profile, search through the About section, look through previous posts, send a direct message, search Google, or comment asking for contact information.

Every additional step creates friction.

And every bit of friction gives that potential customer another opportunity to get distracted, postpone the decision, or find a competitor who makes the process easier.

Don't make people hunt for a way to give you money.

Every Business Post Needs a Next Step

Not every post needs to scream BUY NOW.

But promotional content should give an interested customer a logical next step.

Depending on your business, that could be:

  • Visit our website
  • Call or text us
  • Schedule an appointment
  • Request a free estimate
  • Shop online
  • View our menu
  • Book a consultation
  • Visit our location
  • Complete a lead form
  • Send us an email

The specific action depends on the business.

The principle doesn't:

Tell people what to do next — and make it easy to do it.

"My Contact Information Is on My Profile."

That's good.

Put it in the post when appropriate anyway.

People don't necessarily discover your content by visiting your business profile.

Social content gets shared.

It appears in feeds.

It gets reposted into community groups.

Someone sends it to a friend.

Search engines can surface social content.

People take screenshots.

Your post can travel much farther than your profile.

That individual piece of content may be someone's first interaction with your company.

Treat it like one.

"DM Me" Is Useful. It Isn't a Complete Sales System.

Direct messages can absolutely generate business.

But relying exclusively on "DM me" creates another problem.

What happens when someone finds the post while you're working?

What happens at 1:30 in the morning?

What happens when the notification gets buried?

What happens when five inquiries arrive at once?

A website, lead form, booking system, CRM, online store, or automated response doesn't need to remember to check its messages.

It creates infrastructure behind your marketing.

That's the difference between simply being online and building a digital presence designed to generate business.

Social Media Should Lead Somewhere

Think about your digital marketing as a connected system.

Social Media → Interest → Action → Lead → Customer

Social media creates awareness and attention.

Your website, landing page, booking system, online store, phone line, lead form, or CRM provides the next step.

If that connection is broken, you're generating attention without providing an efficient way to convert it.

At Rising Star I.T. Solutions, this is one of the principles behind how we approach websites and digital marketing.

A website shouldn't exist just so a business can say it has a website.

Marketing shouldn't exist just to generate likes.

Technology shouldn't exist simply because it's available.

Every piece should have a job.

Ultimately, those pieces should work together to make your business easier to discover, easier to contact, and easier to buy from.

The 5-Second Test

Before publishing your next promotional post, look at it as if you've never heard of your company.

Then ask:

If I wanted this product or service RIGHT NOW, could I figure out how to get it within five seconds?

Can I find the website?

Can I call or text?

Can I request a quote?

Can I schedule?

Can I buy?

Do I know where the business is located if location matters?

Do I know exactly what I'm supposed to do next?

If the answer is no, fix the post before publishing it.

Attention Isn't the Finish Line

Likes are nice.

Shares are useful.

Comments increase visibility.

Followers matter.

But businesses don't survive on engagement metrics alone.

The objective is eventually to turn some of that attention into customers and revenue.

Sometimes improving that conversion doesn't require another advertising platform, a bigger marketing budget, or some complicated new strategy.

Sometimes it means doing something remarkably simple:

Tell people how to do business with you.

That's today's Free Game.

Is Your Digital Marketing Actually Connected?

Your website, social media, SEO, advertising, lead generation, customer communication, and automation shouldn't operate as unrelated pieces.

They should work together as a system.

Rising Star I.T. Solutions helps businesses build digital solutions designed around that principle — making businesses easier to find, easier to engage with, and easier to do business with.
